I became a born-again christian on June 3, 1974. I felt God calling me to a musical worship ministry that first year. My god before the Lord God Almighty was my electric bass guitar. I worshipped music and my bass. So when I became a christian I put my bass away and I thought I would become a pastor. But God kept on putting me in a position to play an instrument for Him. For example while at East Los Angeles College we were at a noon time bible study and someone suggested we sing some songs before starting the bible study. Everybody agreed. There was someone there with a guitar but did not know how to play it. I knew how to play guitar, saxophone, clarinet, bass and piano, but I kept quiet, I didn't want to play. Someone knew I played guitar and said, "Eddie plays guitar!" Before I could refuse they had already opened the guitar case and sent the guitar into my laps. I could not say NO but I quietly prayed, "Ok, Lord, but just this one time." Well, it kept happening over and over again the whole summer. Once, at church, the piano lady didn't show up and the song leader said, "We will sing acapella because our piano player didn't show up, anybody know how to play piano?" And somone said, "Eddie knows how." Well, I couldn't say NO in front of the church. I thought, OK God what are you trying to do? You know I don't want to play music!" Well, I played for 3 years, learned a lot of hymns too!Then one day I was reading the bible and I came across this verse:
Psalm 150
1 Praise the LORD!
Praise God in His sanctuary;
Praise Him in His mighty firmament!
2 Praise Him for His mighty acts;
Praise Him according to His excellent greatness!
3 Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet;
Praise Him with the lute and harp!
4 Praise Him with the timbrel and dance;
Praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes!
5 Praise Him with loud cymbals;
Praise Him with clashing cymbals!
6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.
Praise the LORD!
Wow, now I know what God was trying to tell me. He was calling me to the music/worship ministry.
I've played for various churches throught out my 37 years as a christian.
I've played for children's ministry, director for adult and children's choirs, english and spanish music ministries.
I've played acoustic guitar, piano, fender rhodes, banjo, bass, electric guitar.
I am currently playing bass for Calvary Chapel Solid Rock, Chino Hills.
Another calling God has given me is that of missions. I've done various mission trips to Baja California, Nicaragua, and the Peruvian Amazon Jungle where I spent 4 years in Iquitos, Peru as a missionary. It was fantastic and I am looking forwrd to returning to the Amazon and visiting all my friends again.
Please pray about your involvement in missions.
Thank you for reading this blog and may God bless you.
